I owe my deepest gratitude to President Crowe and Athletics Director Lisa Love for the opportunity at leading their program in the future" It is with excitement that I head to Tempe to take over the men's golf program at Arizona State. I would like to thank President Lyons and Ky Snyder for the great leadership they have provided to me over my 8 years at USD, and I would also like to thank all the student-athletes for being the people they are and making every day enjoyable. The USD golf family is and always will be very special to me and a part of my life I will always cherish. I could not be more proud of the current team members and all of the USD golf alumni over the last 8 years who have all contributed to the fine reputation we have built. It is the student-athletes themselves who achieved our on-course accomplishments and they are the ones that have afforded me this opportunity. I'm quite proud of our accomplishments in those 8 years. We wish Tim all the best."Īdded Mickelson, "USD took a chance on me back in 2003 and I'm very thankful to have had the opportunity to coach here for 8 seasons. "Tim built a tremendously successful program with a solid foundation and we look forward to continued success. "Although we are disappointed to lose Tim, we are excited for the opportunity that has presented itself to him," said Ky Snyder, USD Executive Director of Athletics. In 2009 the Toreros placed 13th at Nationals, and in 2008 Mickelson guided the Toreros to the program's first-ever West Coast Conference title. The 2009-10 season was record-setting for the Toreros as USD captured a school-best five tournaments and finished in the top-5 in 10 of their 13 events. In 2010, USD's second trip to Nationals, the Toreros tied for 8th overall and just missed out on advancing to the Match Play format, losing a playoff to Stanford. Junior Alex Ching was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Year. This past season the Toreros tied for 16th at Nationals, won two tournaments (Wolf Pack Classic & Kauai Collegiate) and placed in the top-5 in nine of thirteen events. The close family atmosphere within the USD athletic department is truly special and I enjoyed my 8 years working with my peers." "I cannot thank Ky Snyder, the USD administration and support staff, my assistant Cory Scoggin, and my players enough for their understanding during this decision making process. "It is with sorrow that I announce my resignation as the men's golf coach at USD in order to pursue a similar position at Arizona State," said Tim Mickelson. Mickelson, who earned 4 West Coast Conference Coach of the Year honors, built the Torero program into a national contender, advancing his squads to 5 NCAA Regional Tournaments and 3 National Appearances over the past three seasons. SAN DIEGO, CA - USD men's golf coach Tim Mickelson, who just completed his 8th year at the helm of the Torero program, has accepted the head coaching position at Arizona State University.
